Abstract
This paper presents the influence and relevance of Emotional Intelligence (EI) as the foundation of emotional education on its 30th anniversary. Specifically, the EI model of Peter Salovey and John Mayer is described as an ability model with its advantages over other EI models such as Daniel Goleman's is highlighted for its applications to the education of emotions in society and at school. The scientific evidence on the benefits of EI in the school environment is also shown, showing its relevance in health and happiness, school life or people's academic performance. Finally, we present the RULER and INTEMO / INTEMO + emotional education programs designed from the Mayer and Salovey’s ability model which shows that, when students have received an adequate education in EI and with well-implemented programs, they enjoy better and with greater quality of life and well-being the socio-family relations and academic experiences.
