Abstract
Over the past 35 years, emotional intelligence (EI) has been extensively studied from various theoretical and methodological perspectives. This article analyzes its evolution and applications, through the exploration of the main theoretical models, and includes ability-based approaches, trait models, and mixed approaches through a selective literature review. Its impact on the development of socioemotional competencies and its integration into various fields such as education, organizational management, mental health, and the environment is examined. However, its development has generated controversies, with debates about the validity of the construct, the reliability of its measurement, and its differentiation from other psychological factors. Despite these limitations, advances in neuroscience and artificial intelligence have driven new applications, promoting its assessment and training. This analysis contributes to the understanding of EI as an interdisciplinary field in constant expansion, with theoretical and practical implications across different areas of knowledge.
