Abstract
After 15 years of systematic implementation of social and emotional learning (SEL) initiatives in the United States, research has shown that creating a learning community rich in social and emotional competencies positively impacts students’ academic, social, and emotional skills and improves the classroom climate. However, as social and emotional learning is implemented more broadly in US schools, we find certain misconceptions about how schools and teachers understand this work. The HEART in Mind model emerges to respond to the limitations and challenges of other SEL models and as a tool to overcome the misconceptions that are observed when SEL is implemented in schools. This research-based model incorporates the importance of academic integration, equity, and developing teachers’ social and emotional capacity.
